Words matter

 

 

We express ourselves to others and the world around us through communication: who we are, what we believe in, our attachments and aversions. Much of this communication is through gesture, posture and facial expressions, while spoken communication gives voice to our thoughts and feelings. Each “word” is a creative union of thought and energy. Ideas become thoughts, concepts, language and your plans take on the energy to manifest in the world as the actual results of your intent and skill.

Do you honour your own beliefs and speak out when you should? 

Do you talk over others, or not listen well?  

Do you feel shy and afraid to extend your energy into communication?

Talking consumes a huge amount of energy, so choose your words carefully. At times it is appropriate to be quiet, to listen.

When you next speak, T H I N K :

T – Is this Truthful?
H – Is this Helpful?
I – Is this Inspiring?
N – Is this Necessary?
K – Is this Kind?

In yoga, the throat centre, vishuddhi chakra, represents our ability to communicate verbally. A well balanced Throat Chakra will allow you to communicate and express yourself more freely. You will realize that you can trust your inner voice and speak your truths.

Here is a simple hasta mudra (hand gesture) for balancing the energy at the throat. Bring the pads of the thumbs and middle fingers of both hands gentle together forming Akash mudra. As you sit comfortably, spend a few moments to follow the natural rise and fall of the breathe; to feel the body breathing itself easily and naturally. When ready, repeat silently the following affirmations:

I transmit a unique frequency, my voice is heard

My communication is open, clear and harmonious

 

Spend a little time sitting with each and feel when it’s time to move to the next. You may like to simply work with one affirmation, see what resonates with you in the moment. Recording yourself saying the affirmations can be helpful and very powerful; make sure you leave enough time to centre at the beginning and in between each affirmation for the words can “land”.

Heart Meditation

This is a meditation I recently used in a workshop on the Anahata chakra, to awaken to energy of Spring.

Sit in sukhasana. Place your hands on your knees in chin mudra , with palms facing up to open your awareness or palms facing down (jnana) to calm the mind.
Bring your awareness to the center of your chest. To draw your mind into meditation, start to repeat the sound Om with each exhalation. You can chant Om silently at your heart centre or out loud, letting the sound emanate from your chest.
Let the sound vibrate like a gong, where the sound of Om ripples in all directions. As you work with the sound, feel that each Om widens your heart like a great lake. As you stay with the sound, feel that your heart is being washed of any unnecessary gripping, tension, or feeling.
If a particular emotion arises and starts to overpower the meditation, allow it to be buoyed by the sea of sound. Look underneath, around, and inside that emotion and discover an insight that may arise from the spaciousness of your inquiry. Gradually, the sound of Om will dissolve into the calm spaciousness of the heart-the great container.
When you are ready, bring your hands together in Anjali Mudra (Salutation Seal) and complete your meditation with a moment of gratitude and reflection.

The true heart – anahata chakra

Focus your awareness on the physical heart and its cavity. Although the physical heart only occupies a small space, the true heart is without limitations.
Try to feel the beating of your own heart. LONG PAUSE

Located in the middle of the chest is anahata chakra, the heart centre. The chakras are inner wheels of energy that control and distribute the energy around the body. Through the discipline of yoga (controlled breathing, sound and postures) we can balance these energy centres to awaken, release and harmonize the body.
The organs associated with Anahata are the lungs, the heart, and the entire cardiovascular system. These are the pumps and delivery systems of prana to the body’s many systems.
Nurturing the energy of the fourth chakra through breathing, meditation, and asana is vital to maintaining the body’s own healing power.

Anahata chakra is the centre of air.

Air is expansive and will expand into any space yet it is gentle and soft. Love is similar, being an expansion of the heart. Ideally, the heart chakra radiates love from a spring of solidly centered self-acceptance that reaches out with the compassion, care and support of others. Balance of our love of self and love for others and the interconnectedness of our spirits, is the fundamental message of this chakra.
Loving encompasses nurturing, caring, supporting, understanding, protecting among many other qualities.
When this chakra is open and balanced there is a genuine ability to give and to receive.
The anahata centre controls the sense of touch. This is not surprising, for the heart meridians run along the length of the arms into the hands. It is through our hands that we offer love in the form of comfort, a loving caress or a healing touch.

A wonderful practice for the heart centre is Hridaya Mudra (heart gesture).

Place the tips of index fingers to base of the thumbs and join the tips of middle and ring fingers to tips of thumbs. Little finger remains straight. Hands on knees, palms up.
Observe breath in the chest area.

If you enjoy sound, chant the mantra YAM three times in silence, 3 times aloud and 3 times in silence. Then observe the effect on body, mind and breath. Feel the effect on the whole system ; a feeling of harmony and deep peace.

Benefits : diverts flow of prana from the hands to the heart area, improving the vitality of the physical heart. The middle and ring fingers relate directly to the nadis connected with the heart, while the thumb closes the circuit and acts as an energizer, diverting the flow of prana from the hands to these nadis.
This mudra helps to release pent up emotion and unburden the heart. It may be useful during emotional conflict or crisis.
